I was VERY blessed when I got into the hobby to have excellent Elmers who taught & explained as well as I had a drive to truly learn vs. How/why do these types of discussions persist as any sort of factual lore to only taint/confuse those who are new to the hobby? I'm not looking to light the "WELL, NO-CODE TECHS DESTROYED THE HOBBY" fuse, nor crucify the errant Extra for regurgitating what he obviously feels to be true but also shows he likely memorized answers rather than learned theory to obtain his license-I am genuinely curious how this nonsense persists. We're not talking about line loss, insertion loss of connectors/adapters/meter, co-phasing antennas-none of that, just old school 1970's urban legend stuff about 'tuning your coax' to tune your antenna and you can't do that using a jumper between the radio and SWR meter. Newb is asking for guidance on troubleshooting high SWR on a new antenna install, Extra starts down the rabbit-hole of coax length will affect your SWR (even to go so far as to say the 1' jumper between the TX and SWR meter will throw off the reading of the antenna since Newb was measuring at the TX end of the feedline and the jumper 'added to that length'). One station is a relatively new call, the other is a vanity Extra call. Scanning the 2M band this afternoon and a discussion about SWR/antennas catches my attention.
