Steam for example already takes like 30% for each copy sold for themselves and now Unity wants to "tax" the developers who are already using some paid variants of the Unity software. The problem with Unity's policy is that, instead of writing negative reviews it opens the way for players to literally control some of the developer's money by constantly installing and reintalling the game if they find some issues or simply despise the game or developers. In some cases it can be justified (publisher's greed, differences between trailers and a final game, huge amount of bugs, neglecting or insulting playerbase, lies and other things). Players when irritated, angered, frustraded, disappointed are capable to do some really bad things. There is a lack of information whether after reaching past $200,000 and 200,000 total installations the fee will stay during next twelve months or permamently (because on one year dev may gain huge income, and another year may not and would be still charged with this ridiculous fee) We pay for the game once, yet Unity will take some money for each installation. It targets indie developers, who will now have to pay additional money, because their games are successful, which reduces their income, might bancrupt them. Here's more info about Unity Runtime Fee : įrom my perspective it's disgusting and outrageous, here's why (I'll take Unity Personal as an example) : Their reason for this is: "The Unity Runtime Fee goes towards the continued investment in that code to support the billions of devices served every month." That include every copy of the game no matter whether was bought legally or pirated due to Unity's runtime code which is installed every time the game is installed. From what I've read after 1st of January 2024 if a developer, who is using Unity Personal and Unity Plus earns an income from published game which has exceeded 200,000 dollars over the last twelve months and at least 200,000 per-game lifetime installs will be charged with a "Unity Runtime Fee" - obligation to pay twenty cents per EACH INSTALATION of the game.
